Katong Gardens

Blending wood, marble and mother of pearl with contemporary furniture and tropical accents, the inspiration of this spacious apartment was a touch of Modern Bali.

Modern Resort at Joo Chiat

The design set out to create an urban oasis that serves as an escape to recharge and rejuvenate. With ample space, this older condo had a complete overhaul and was opened up further to create a spacious open plan living space. The slab cut marble floors run through the entire living and dining space.

In the living room, a feature wall of granite adds a moody vibe, which is offset with the heavy beamed ceiling. Furniture is kept contemporary and ethnic accent pieces are mixed with modern artwork. Solid wood skirtings and doors further provide a natural vibe. An antique Indian window is repurposed as a coffee table and a custom rug was weaved specially for this room.

The kitchen is kept open plan, but can be closed off with black framed glass panels in case of heavy duty cooking. Tone on tone patterned tiles add texture, while the breakfast counter has a live edge wood top. Moroccan lights and ample hanging plants add character. In the dining room, a large dining table with leather chairs set the tone. Asian inspired furniture and accents add a punch of colour. The mother of pearl chandeliers pick up from the mother of pearl feature wall in the foyer. The granite cladding in the dining room hides an office nook.

Leading up the stairs are the bedrooms, the risers are a solid piece of marble for a continued look. More wood accent, plants and eclectic artwork add colour and personality. The wood slat walls hide a storage room, shoe cabinets and utility cabinet

In the master bedroom, granite cladding is added at the headboard, while mother of pearl is used as an accent for the TV panel. Contemporary furniture is mixed with Asian inspired pieces and a large chandelier is making a statement.

The bathrooms are kept natural with travertine inspired tiles. One feature wall with a strong colour is mixed with a toned down version of the same tile. Louvred doors are used for the vanities – to further enhance the resort vibe. Beaded chandeliers add colour and a bit of whimsy.

Completed in January 2019, the Katong Gardens project was handled while the home owners lived overseas. The home was fully renovated and ready to move in when the family relocated to Singapore. The four bedroom condo, a resale project, was designed by Arjan Nijen Twilhaar, Principal Interior Designer at Aiden T Pte Ltd
