Who says shoe box apartments can’t be big on ideas? This small apartment got a grand make over, packed with architectural detailing and finished in cozy soft colours. Next to the usual cornice detail and over sized skirting boards, wood trim was added to the original interior doors for that extra detail needed. To avoid the look of the contemporary window frames, we placed a frame around the window that serves as a finishing of the window treatment. A light was placed between the blinds and the window, so in the evening this doubles up as another light source.
In the dining area, a small console table doubles up as a dining table as well as an entrance hall table. Using comfortable dining chairs, they double up as occasional chairs when there are guests.
The compact kitchen goes large on style – with grey panel doors with added trim detail. Over sized marble tiles are used for the back splash, which are offset with a simple pure white quartz counter top. The integrated appliances help to free up much needed counter space and by placing open shelves at one side of the kitchen, it helps to open up the space.
In the master bedroom, we had to deal with an awkward lay-out, mainly the placement of the window to service the AC ledge. This prevented a functional lay-out where you face the bed when you walk into the room. A Feng Shui requirement that is also practical and ideal from a design aesthetic point of view. The headboard wall cleverly hides the window, while it is still accessible when the AC needs to be serviced.
Marble tiles in the bathroom give an upmarket feel and we selected a larger size tile to give that extra luxury feel. Contrasting the texture on the wall, the floors are kept even and some wood was added in the shape of the vanity. The mirror cabinet was a mix of a big box purchase, which was mounted on a custom made medicine cabinet. This adds some extra style in the bathroom.
